OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Occupational Therapy at Curamus School focusses on supporting the learners in the school and home environment to enable participation and competence.

We liase with the teachers in order to facilitate optimal participation and engagement in the classroom environment.

We address challenges in sensory integration, fine motor, visual perceptual and gross motor skills.

Not all children receive OT but learners are identified according to their needs and intervention is then provided in a group or individual setting.

SPEECH THERAPY

Speech Therapy at Curamus School focuses on the support and improvement of all aspects of communication, namely:

- Speech production
- Language development
- Phonological awareness, auditory processing, and literacy skills
- Social skills
- Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
- Hearing screenings and management of hearing problems
- Provision of visual aids and schedules

A total communication model is used to assist learners with no- or little functional speech.
Low- and high-tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) resources are available. The Staff is trained in South African Sign Language that is adapted for learners with special needs.
Support is given throughout the school in the form of visuals and communication boards in classes as well as on the playground.
The Speech Therapists collaborate closely with the Teachers in terms of the curriculum to help with specific language and literacy outcomes.

Not all learners in the school receive individual therapy but all of the learners benefit from indirect intervention through systems and programmes implemented in the classes to improve functional communication.

SOCIAL WORKER

MUSIC THERAPY

Group Music Therapy utilizes music as a platform for communication, facilitating successful social interaction and personal growth. Participants can become involved through improvised music making or known songs using vocalization and different instruments. Music therapy encourages communication, and teamwork and increases self-confidence.

At school, we are privileged to have a full set of Marimbas (donated by the Marimba Education Fund). The Learners have the opportunity to develop music skills and play in an ensemble with their peers while also enhancing co-ordination and rhythm.

HORSE RIDING THERAPY

Learners can be enrolled in horse riding. They are driven to horse riding by the school transport. This activity takes place during school hours.
