A message from our Principal, Mrs. Michelle van Zyl:
Every day is Autism Acceptance Day at Curamus School for Autism.
In April the whole world celebrates and gets to be part of our wonderful world. We had an exciting time and got to share what we do with lots of people. We now have new friends and are looking forward to the way forward with them.
Our activities started on Saturday 18 March with a Sign language workshop for parents to learn to communicate with their children. Even though it was a long weekend, the hall was packed with more than 100 people. Parents joined in enthusiastically to practice signs.
Friday the 14th of April focused on our very own learners. They spent the morning expressing their own feelings about their Autism. They are their own best advocates and our therapists spent time with them listening to their questions and expectations. A fun creative activity was done. This is something we will be doing on a regular basis now.
On Friday the 21th of April we were joined by 100 teachers from mainstream schools. We held a workshop on supporting the ASD learner in the mainstream classroom. We will be holding a more in depth 2 day workshop in June.
On Tuesday the 25th of April we were joined by members from our municipality who spent the morning exploring our school. These important stakeholders got to see what our learners and staff do on a daily basis.
On Sunday the 23rd of April a full theatre of supporters joined us at the Barnyard Theatre for a Fundraising event. A fun afternoon raised funds for us to employ extra staff to help us look after our wonderful children. We are grateful for the community support.
An exciting, busy month left us with more supporters who will join hands with us to include our learners in all aspects of our community.
