Curamus School for Autism

What a wonderful concert!

A glimpse behind the curtains of Curamus Revue 2022

Just another ordinary school concert, you might say? Really?…If only the world understood!

Come closer, let me take you backstage to get a glimpse into our world. Take a good look and decide for yourself!

My friends have taken their places, but I am hesitant.
My teacher is carefully keeping the stage door closed and distract me with ribbons and fairy lights until she knows the loud sound of the African Lion’s roar on stage is done. She understands my fear for the sound effects and comforts me until it is safe enough to open the door so that I can venture on stage.

The stage is dark!
The stage is bright!
My friends are doing moves we have practised since February, their eyes nailed on the teacher who is demonstrating each movement, just the way we practised!
Some of us love to dance and sing! For some it is really stressful!

My costume is scratchy, the lights are bright! The music is very loud! But I can feel my teacher’s hand on mine, and I know I will be OK.

The audience is clapping, their cheers are too loud and just when I think: “This is it, I want to run!”
…. The curtain closes. Just in time!

Our teacher guides us through the backdoor.
People are pushing me, bumping into me… a meltdown is very, VERY close!
But then again, I feel my teacher’s reassuring hand and I see her smiling.

Relieved that our item is over, I walk past a girl with sound reducing ear moulds. It helps her to cope with noise. A boy is wearing a weighted vest, and I know that the weight really calms him down.

We are done. We can escape to our familiar classroom where we will wait for the grand finale.
I know exactly what to expect next as we have practised the routine a thousand times!

At last, my class is called for the final song!
I know the whole school will be on stage: There will be bright colours, lights and different smells! Lots of bodies! Lots of noise!

The music starts to play:
“I see trees of green, red roses too, I see them bloom, for me and you….“ As if in a signing-choir, my friends get the cue and let their hands “sing” the words of Louis Amstrong’s song.
I search through the sea of faces in front of me….and there, in the second row, I spot familiar faces!
My ever supporting, smiling family! They are so proud of me!
So proud that this year, I managed to get on to the stage!

“I see friends shaking hands Saying how do you do They’re really saying
I love you.”

I join in, and my hands start to sign the words my lips will never be able to form.

Just another ordinary concert, you might say!?

If you take a closer look, you will see 174 children, each overcoming their own challenges and fears. Each one growing at their own pace, being accepted unconditionally for who they are.

And indeed, if you come a bit closer:

You will see:
Our world is a wonderful world!…….

O yes!
